Much of the written history of the Conewango Valley Kennel Club literally went up in smoke during a fire in the '60s. However, with the help of all the current members, we have started to piece together data and stories from its inception. We have found that the club, originally called the Chautauqua Kennel Club, was founded in 1948.
The original breed shows were held in many different places. These included Wrightsville PA and the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds in Dunkirk NY. At these fairgrounds, the club celebrated its 10th anniversary in June 14, 1958 with a special Champion class and special green and white rosettes with the Champion's name on it.
The club eventually settled on the Jamestown/Lakewood NY area to hold their monthly membership meetings. They also have, for many years, held their yearly breed show at the Fireman's Grounds in Stockton, NY. Recently this show has developed into a great four-day cluster. As of 2010 the Clubs Annual Dog Show is held in Dunkirk, NY at the Chautauqua County Fairground.
